she dorks out

experiencing history…online.

Last night while my friends were out making party at bars, in Time Square, at election parties in every nook and cranny of New York, I was at home dorking out. Yup. I was on Twitter non-stop, I was facebooking, I was watching current tv, I was reading blogs…oh yeah and I had the tv on too. I was tuned in, plugged in, and communicating about it all with as many people as I could.

I have so much to write about as far as what I experienced, the communication that happened, and how exciting it was to be a part of this election in cyberspace, but to begin I’ll start with the shallow ‘omfg it’s me!’ part:

election night 2008 on Gawker

election night 2008 on Gawker

Thats right…I was on Gawker last night. While tweeting with fellow nerds I came across a link. Gawker was asking for election night party photos, and although I lacked the party part of that request, I was still watching the election…so why not, right? I sent in a random photobooth picture I took in about 30 seconds, not thinking it would actually get posted, but I’m guessing their submission level was extremely low (as most people were not sitting at home blogging, micro-blogging, and social networking on this historic night). So, low and behold they posted it! HA. Please take a moment to laugh at the ridiculousness of this photo, especially after knowing that there were absolutely no substances involved, just a lot of dorking out:)

The election night on Twitter is my next subject, but my screen shots are on my other computer, so that post will have to wait.

i’m back!

November 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

It’s been months, seems like years….can I say an eternity(?) since I’ve written on shedorksout…and oh how I’ve missed the smell, taste, touch, sound, and feel of it!  I am sorry for the neglect, and I’m ready to re-commit myself.

So, as we heard our new president say (can we get a lite w00t w00t for that!?!? YES WE CAN and YES.WE.DID!)  in the most exciting, moving, and hope filled election winning speech given during my lifetime, “This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.”

Yes. We. Did.

To take that completely out of context and use it in terms of me, and this blog, I am using this moment to dive back in with full force and intensity…And now let my blogging journey re-begin!

Stuff White People Like, the blog I wrote about a little while back that has gained an enormous following and a plethora of media in the last few months was bought by Target?

stuff whitetarget

They just released the statement yesterday…and they are excited about it. Boo to them, there is no way Target will keep this hilarious commentary on the cliches of white American culture going…..do we think think is an April Fools joke? White people do love April fools!

guilty pleasure or just really bad?

March 10, 2008 · 3 Comments

So, I recently started visiting Sarah Meyers new website/webshow/blog Pop17. I’m totally and utterely at a loss as to how I really feel about this webshow.

pop 17

Here’s my dilmema:

I love the content being covered-most of the time. It’s interesting stuff I know and care about. Stuff that I’m immersed in at all times. The things that make me the dork I am. The show covers people I’m interested in. The people making, creating, maintaining and innovating in the web-o-sphere. So, it’s great to actually have a show covering stuff like this.

BUT…on the other hand, Sarah Meyers bugs the shit out of me. Opps…I just swore. Sorry. Sarah Meyers gets under my skin in a bad way. Her fake cheery, trying-to-be a tv reporter style is annoying, contrived, and takes away from the topics being covered. She makes herself look stupid. The show seems to be written by a smart individual, and dumbed down by the way Meyers sounds, and looks, like she is reading off a cue card. UGH. Not to mention the way she attempts to crack jokes and make witty comments, that are neither of those what-so-ever.

So, my problem…I like the content, I hate the execution of it….Take a look and let me know what you guys think.

this time LOL is the best description

February 26, 2008 · 2 Comments

This was sent to me recently. I thought it was something my friend randomly stumbled upon (and not in the sumbleupon sense), not something almost everyone is in the process of getting turned on to.

stuffwhitepeoplelike
Stuff White People Like is hilarious. It takes cliches to the next level by creating them-in a way. It’s like the cliche you know exists but isn’t a cliche yet because it’s too modern. Well, that’s what this blog is all about. Ridiculous things white people like, a brief humorously written few paragraphs on it, and an accompanying photo. There is a new post anywhere from everyday to every 3 days, which is great because the small amount of content is turning this blog into a daily must read for a growing number of people.

I highly recommend you add it to your bookmarks, not just del.icio.us . It’s one of those sights you want to remember to check everyday: Today I was reminded that I, among all white people, threaten to move to Canada when I don’t agree with things going on in the US. Ha.

for all you jet setters out there…

January 10, 2008 · 2 Comments

I want to talk about a site that in the last 6 months has gone from almost no users to about 34,000, and with good reason. DOPPLR is: A. a social network, kinda B. A twitter type ish thing sorta in that people see where you are(an update sorta) C. a planning tool D. a little bit of a lot of different things.

Now, to be more specific, because that was a ridiculous description, DOPPLR is a site, in the most simple description possible, to manage and track your travel (for you and yours). To begin with, you create a simple personal profile, than you enter in trips that you have planned in the near or far future. This site is really cool, and actually useful, for a number of reasons. When you view your upcoming trips , the view is available in list or map form (which I think is really cool!). You can easily let your friends know where you are going and when by sending them a message, or simply by having them as a contact (or in this site’s case they are called Fellow Travelers). You can choose who sees your trips, and whose trips you are updated on depending on how you choose to manage your ‘fellow travelers.’ The site keeps a ‘Journal‘ of your virtual life on DOPPLR, as well as documenting your past travel…sorta like a facebook newsfeed. Another really awesome thing is that DOPPLR will tell you if you know anybody who lives, is visiting, or is planning a trip in/at the place you are traveling to. But, as useful as that is, you have to have entered them into your DOPPLR account somewhere along the lines for that to actually work, and in all truthfulness, that probably won’t happen at this young stage of the site.

As far as design goes, I am really impressed with its simplicity. It doesn’t need to be more complex or more interactive than it already is. It works extremely well, and is an amazing digital tool for jet setters, which is a noun that is becoming more and more common these days for work or personal life.

If you read my blog and are on the move nonstop, I beg of you to at least give DOPPLR a chance…if not for your own management, than at least so you don’t have to twitter, facebook status update, myspace bulletin, text, or blog about where you are going, each time you go somewhere.

May DOPPLR be with you.

one touch and boom…explode!

January 9, 2008 · 1 Comment

More in the realm of cool new websites, this one just happens to be a friend of mine (and I’m so proud of him!:) I can’t say it’s just him, because there are multiple people involved in TouchExplode …but anyway

I’m not really sure what the best way to explain TouchExplode is, because its content is so diverse on a day to day basis. That being said though, it is similar to JoshSpear.com in the sense that everything ties together nicely, even though the content from post to post can be completely different.

TouchExplode combines digital popular trends, hip hop clothing, music videos, really cool art, sometimes cool new products, photos, interviews, and pretty much everything in between and beyond those categories. It’s sleek and chic aesthetically, well written and concise (oops sometimes I am bad about that!), and the content always finds a way to impress me. This blog went from being a joke to potentially being a business in the future. I don’t want to jinx them, or put words in their mouths…but if it was me I would be getting ready for a major explosion. You should bookmark this and visit it, if not daily than at least a few times a week.

Zune still lags millions of miles behind the iPod

December 14, 2007 · 3 Comments

So, I was planning on doing a post on the Microsoft Zune, but now I’m just doing a quick post on how PopularMechanics: http://www.popularmechanics.com already beat me to it in their amazing Top 10 Worst Gadgets of 2007 post: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/reviews/4236755.html?page=1

Although it only falls in at number 8, which doesn’t really show just how dumb of a move it was for Microsoft to think they could compete with the iPod, this little blurb is worth reading. Laugh away people; it’s dumb…real dumb. While you’re there, take a look at the entire list. It pretty much sums up advances in technology that were either A. not advances at all B. created for the extremely lazy population that probably doesn’t have the money to buy this stuff because they are so lazy or C. just plain ridiculous. It’s funny. Great post PopularMechanics!

do we trust a trend or stick with geeky?

December 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Another social network post, sorry for all your guys that are already bogged down with 15+ social networks to keep up with, most likely this one won’t add to the list for you. This social network is strictly for the fashionistas, label whores, can’t live without couture ladies (and gents of course!). Trendiki: http://www.trendiki.com is the social network for those that use their myspace, facebook, and blogs to rep. the fashion they love. But, on Trendiki profile names like Trendgeeky and FashionGuyd are respectable. Although it’s a pretty girly website, the homepage being black and pink kinda gives that feel to it right off the bat, there are guys involved. Trendiki combines a place to have a personal profile, but also is a veritable search engine for everything fashion; with fashion blogs, designer websites, style news, deals not to miss, and anything else fashion and trend related you can think of it might be better to use this for fashion questions rather than googling. If your life is a whirwind of fashion this and that’s, here’s your virtual living space. Go make your Trendiki impact you stylish creatures you!
