opinions and advice greatly desired…

I’m thinking about playing around with live streaming/lifecasting, whatever you want to call it. I don’t know what site I want to use though. Does anyone love one site more than the other?

Also, what the h is up with not being able to take video with the iphone…kinda bummed. Even my janky piece of nastyness from Verizon that I had before my iphone could take video. Come on Steve…maybe HD video for iPhone video streaming…that would be m-a-zing.

I got a little down when I found out I couldn’t take video with the iPhone too. Any way you can start a petition here? I’d sign it.

The new Yahoo! Live is probably your best best for live broadcasting. Stickam’s solution is more developed… but it’s just horrid looking. Yahoo handles traffic better as well.

There is another option, depending on how serious you are and how much time you want to spend. Since you are working on a Mac, you could use QuickTime and Darwin Streaming Server to stream live video. Now, there’s going to be an encoding delay, and you’ll be limited by local bandwidth (although you could just buy a server and relay the stream from there), but you can actually transmit whatever you want. You could stream a 640×480 H.264 encoded MP4 if you wanted to. Like I said, it depends how serious you are. This probably isn’t the place to start, but it’s an option. I used Microsoft’s solution (forget what it’s called) for this a years ago as a Freshman in college, while leaching the dorms bandwidth, to transmit a life stream for WMP. It was awesome.

The iPhone is capable of video. Why it was left out of the launch feature set I don’t know. I haven’t actually looked at the SDK, but I’d assume we’ll see video applications when the Apps Store goes live this summer. Expect Qik compatibility not too long after.

If you want to be mobile and drop some coin, check out qik.com w/ a Nokia N95. I used it to capture some videos interviews with software development wonks. Nice setup.

Here’s an example of the quality, http://qik.com/video/27886

You push a button and you’re live! What’s cool is that when people comment you can see the comments right on the device as they happen. What isn’t cool is battery life. Say about 20-30 minutes of streaming :(
